Brenhal

Brenhal is one of the largest cities in Elendel, second in population to the capital, Miritral. Relatively new, Brenhal was founded some time after the rebellion, on the mouth of a river East of Miritral. Since then, it has boomed in population, and due its location near wilderness, proximity to the capital, and easy access from all main roads, has become a hot spot for groups of adventurers and travelers looking to get into a more dangerous line of work.

Though its population is nowhere near that of Miritral’s, Brenhal sits at a comfortable 28,000 or so people, making it quite the sizable city. It is a port city, and has a diverse population, with an unusually large number of orcs residing inside the city walls. It is also a much more progressive city than Miritral, with a history of fighting for equality for most non-human races. As such, most orcs and dwarves who manage to get enough money to make it out of their respective slums in other cities try to make their way to Brenhal to make a life for themselves. Its location on the coast also means it has a well-off economy, with merchants walking the streets with a stretched coinpurse, and many a potential wife having no trouble finding a rich husband. Unfortunately, the divide between the two sections of the city by the river has caused a split between the population. The eastern side of the city is much poorer and less respected than the west side, which is typically much more wealthy, and less diverse as well. This had led to some conflict between residents of both sides, although the city guard has strict orders to stop or contain any sort of disturbance caused by this.

The city is mostly unprotected in the outer areas; much of it is farmland or small cottages, and as such does not warrant the protection of a large wall. However, around the city proper there is a thick stone wall, defended by members of guard, and the outer areas are patrolled by guards. The city is large enough to warrant its own city guard, unlike most other towns, which take protection from the capital’s garrison. Brenhal is also very close to The Stone of the South, and as such is easily reachable by the military forces.
